Product Description: MC73110

The MC73110 DC Motor Control IC provides high performance digital current loop, velocity loop, and commutation, for brushless DC motors. This intelligent single-axis drive DC motor controller operates in internal velocity profile mode, velocity mode with an external velocity command signal, or torque mode with an external torque command signal. The MC73110 can be operated standalone, using pre-programmed flash-stored parameters, or through the serial port using microprocessor-style commands.

The current loop provides software-programmable P and I terms as well as other parameters such as shoot-through protection timing. Two symmetric 3-phase PWM (pulse width modulated) output modes are provided, 6-signal mode and 3-signal mode. Two direct-input analog signals provide current feedback from the drive. Commutation is software-programmable, and can occur using a six-step waveform or using a sinusoidal waveform. Velocity feedback is provided by the quadrature encoder, or via a direct-input analog tachometer signal. Velocity commands are provided by an internal profile generator, by a digital SPI 16-bit data stream, or by direct-input analog signal. A programmable compensation filter closes the loop and determines the motor command.

With over 130 commands, the Magellan Motion Processors provide a flexible and powerful instruction set to initialize and control the motion application, monitor ongoing performance, and synchronize overall machine behavior. Working with the Magellan devices, PMD’s powerful Pro-Motion® GUI makes it easy to graph and analyze system performance, while C-Motion® allows you to develop your own application using C/C++.

To create a complete DC motion controller, the MC73110 is connected to three half-bridge amplifiers, typically MOSFET or IGBT-based. The MC73110 is packaged in a compact 64-pin PQFP (plastic quad flat pack), and operates from 3.3 V.
